THE RED TAPE REPORT: Why is the Veterans Office Being Stalled?
BEDFORD, IN — A growing bottleneck at the Lawrence County Courthouse is leaving our local veterans waiting for services, despite the money to fix the problem already being sitting in the bank.
I recently spoke with Brad Bough, our County Veterans Service Officer (and candidate for County Commissioner), regarding a critical vacancy in his office. Here is what we’ve uncovered about the current "hiring freeze" and the questions it raises for Lawrence County taxpayers.
The Problem: A Funded Position with a "No-Entry" Sign
The Veterans Office has an opening for an Assistant Service Officer that has been vacant since March 31st.
- The Funding: The position is fully budgeted. The Auditor’s office has already confirmed the money is there.
- The Roadblock: The Lawrence County Council has imposed a hiring freeze, meaning no one can be brought on board without their specific "blessing"—even for roles that are already paid for.
- The Delay: This freeze forces a 4-week waiting period. Nothing can move until the next Council meeting on April 28th.
Why Does This Matter?
When we talk about "transparency" and "efficiency" in local government, this is exactly the kind of bureaucracy that gets in the way. While the Council stalls:
- Veterans Wait: Appointment times are getting longer and response delays are increasing for those who served our country.
- Employment Gaps: We hear constantly that "people don't want to work," yet here we have a funded local job that can’t be filled because of a procedural freeze.
The "Kiosk" Connection
In our discussion, we also touched on the lack of "productive" opportunities for young people in our community. While businesses move toward automation and kiosks (which don't pay local income tax like a resident would), the county’s own hiring processes are making it harder to get people into the local workforce.
What’s Next?
Brad Bough has issued a public apology to Lawrence County veterans for these delays and is calling for "common sense" to prevail. He intends to face the County Council on Tuesday, April 28th, to demand this freeze be lifted.
WE WANT TO KNOW: Why is the County Council freezing positions that are already confirmed in the budget? Is this about fiscal responsibility, or is it a political "power play" at the expense of our veterans?
JOB SEEKERS: If you are an Honorably Discharged Veteran and a resident of Lawrence County, Brad is currently accepting resumes for the Assistant position.
