INVESTIGATION: Bedford Man Found Dead Outside Downtown Bloomington Business
Authorities in Monroe County have released the identity of a Lawrence County man who was tragically found deceased on a downtown sidewalk early Wednesday morning.
Raymond Stewart, 51, of Bedford, was identified by Monroe County Coroner Jeff Hall on Thursday after his immediate family was formally notified of his passing.
The Discovery on Walnut Street
The incident began on the morning of Wednesday, June 10, 2026, at approximately 8:45 a.m.. A caller contacted emergency dispatchers to report an adult male who appeared to be completely unconscious and not breathing at the entrance of a business located on the east side of the 200 block of North Walnut Street. The location was directly in front of Hot Rod's Downtown barber shop, adjacent to The Bluebird music club.
Officers from the Bloomington Police Department and emergency medical technicians rushed to the scene. Upon arrival, first responders determined that Stewart was already deceased and he was officially pronounced dead at the scene.
No Obvious Signs of Trauma
Bloomington Police Department Captain Ryan Pedigo stated that investigators thoroughly processed the scene but discovered no immediate or obvious signs of foul play or physical trauma on Stewart’s body.
During the initial phase of the tracking investigation, police erected temporary privacy barriers around the entryway of the business while officers and investigators from the Monroe County Coroner's Office collected evidence and examined the perimeter. The barriers were dismantled and removed later that morning after Stewart's body was taken into the custody of the coroner.
Autopsy Scheduled to Find Answers
Because there were no immediate weapons, trauma, or obvious environmental factors, both the exact cause and the manner of Stewart's death are currently listed as undetermined.
Coroner Jeff Hall confirmed that an official autopsy has been scheduled for Friday, June 12, 2026, to be conducted at a specialized forensic facility in Terre Haute. Forensic toxicological screens and internal examinations from that autopsy are expected to provide the crucial details Bloomington detectives need to determine exactly what led to the Bedford resident’s sudden death.
