🌳 NEW DOWNTOWN PARK: City of Bedford and BUEA Partner for Inclusive Playground at Historic Monon Site 🌳

🌳 NEW DOWNTOWN PARK: City of Bedford and BUEA Partner for Inclusive Playground at Historic Monon Site 🌳

A historic piece of downtown Bedford is set to undergo a major transformation into a modern, inclusive park and playground.

The City of Bedford is officially partnering with the Bedford Urban Enterprise Association (BUEA) to develop the land located along J Street, just north of the downtown square. This location is the former site of the historic Monon Depot, which was tragically damaged beyond repair by a fire in September 2023. The BUEA owns both the Depot site and the adjacent property to the north, providing plenty of space for the new multi-use recreational area.

Here are the confirmed details on the vision for the new park:

Park Features & Amenities

Inclusive Playgrounds: The park will feature high-quality, accessible play apparatus designed specifically for children of all abilities.

Safe Surfaces: Plans include "soft surface" flooring throughout the play areas to ensure safety and comfort.

Community Amenities: The space will offer dedicated picnic areas and convenient family parking for those visiting downtown.

Connecting to the Milwaukee Trail

A major highlight of the project is the integration with Bedford's existing outdoor infrastructure. The proposal calls for a new connector path that will link the J Street park directly to the Milwaukee Trail, a popular destination for local hikers and cyclists. This connection is intended to enhance the walkability of Bedford, allowing residents to travel seamlessly from the trail right into the heart of downtown.

What's Next?

Currently, Mayor Samuel J. Craig and BUEA members have been scouting successful municipal parks in other cities to gather ideas. These visits will help guide the professional designers who are tasked with creating the specific blueprints for the site. Because the city is taking a measured approach, a specific project timeline and total cost will not be determined until those formal designs are finalized.
