The Full Picture: Why Lawrence County Needs a Watchdog

By The Editor

I grew up right here in Bedford. Like many of you, I spent my younger years just living life in Lawrence County, never once thinking I’d end up in the world of journalism. I wasn't the kid at the high school paper; I was just a neighbor, a worker, and eventually, a father.

But over time, the view from my front porch started to change. I began to realize that as a community, we aren’t seeing the full picture of what is happening in our own backyard.

Lawrence County is Home

I love this city. Bedford isn't just a location on a map; it’s home. Lawrence County is a place where people come to enjoy their retirement in peace, but it’s also a place where our children are finding their way.

Right now, we have over a thousand students at Bedford North Lawrence High School. Those kids are our future. While some will move on to other places, many of them will stay right here. They will grow, build careers, and create families of their own in these neighborhoods. They deserve to inherit a community that is safe, honest, and open.

Beyond the Mugshots: It’s Not About Shaming

I am often asked—sometimes with quite a bit of heat—why I post mugshots and arrest logs. To those who feel I am "shaming" individuals: I want you to look at the bigger picture.

This isn't about shaming; it's about documenting reality. When we see a rise in meth-related arrests or reports of public intoxication in the middle of the day—while our kids are walking home from school or while you’re getting groceries—that is a symptom of a deeper issue. If we brush these reports off and look the other way, we are failing our neighbors. When we see a neighbor in trouble, our first question shouldn't just be "Why did the Watchdog post this?" It should be "What is our community doing to help, and why are these issues not being addressed?"

Transparency for the People

We vote. We pay taxes. We participate in this community. Because of that, we have a fundamental right to know how our government offices are operating.

I’m not here to tell you not to trust our local government. I’m here to say that transparency is the foundation of trust. Consider our local Veterans Affairs office: the money is there, but a hiring freeze stays in place for a month because of the red tape of a council meeting schedule. These are the things people miss because they can't attend every meeting or because the meetings aren't broadcasted. I do want to point out that the City of Bedford is doing a better job on broadcasting live meetings.

Have we done a deep dive into our own budgets? Do we know exactly where every tax dollar is going? The Watchdog exists to be your eyes and ears in those rooms.

Building Informed Voters

A vote is only as good as the information behind it. If the next generation at BNL is going to stay here and build this county, they need to be informed voters. They need to understand who they are voting for and whether those officials are standing behind their agendas once they get into office.

The days of a daily newspaper landing on every doorstep in Bedford are gone. Some people don’t use social media, and others only see what the algorithms allow. That is why I built this platform. We need a voice that isn't afraid to publish the truth—from the citizen allegedly in trouble to the government official making the rules.

Our Mission

I am a resident of this county just like you. I see the intoxication on our streets, the struggle in our neighborhoods, and the bureaucracy in our offices. I care about our future just like you do.

The mission of The Watchdog is simple: Transparency for the public. I hope you feel that what is being done here is right. Lawrence County is a place worth watching over, and the first step to fixing our problems is having the courage to look at them clearly.

Thank you for keeping the watch with me.
